چکیده

Two rival hypotheses have been proposed for the origin of the compact radio flux observed in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs). It has been suggested that the radio emission in these objects, typically some two or three orders of magnitude less powerful than in radio-loud quasars (RLQs), represents either emission from a circumnuclear starburst or is produced by radio jets with bulk kinetic powers ∼ 10 times lower than those of RLQs with similar luminosity ratios in other wavebands. We describe the results of high resolution (∼ parsec-scale) radio-imaging observations of a sample of 12 RQQs using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). We find strong evidence for jet-producing central engines in 8 members of our sample.

Broad Absorption Line Quasars and the Radio–Loud/Radio–Quiet Dichotomy

The observation that the extremely broad, blueshifted absorption troughs which characterize broad absorption line quasars (BALQs) occur exclusively in radio–quiet quasars (RQQs) suggests that this class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) may offer important clues to the radio–loud/radio–quiet (RL/RQ) dichotomy in quasars. Interestingly, there is also substantial observational evidence for similar,...

Occurrence and Global Properties of Narrow C Iv Λ1549å Absorption Lines in Moderate-redshift Quasars

A statistical study is presented of (a) the frequency of narrow C iv λ1549 absorption lines in 1.5 < ∼ z < ∼ 3.6 radio-quiet and radio-loud quasars, and of (b) the UV and radio properties of the absorbed quasars. The quasar sample is unbiased with respect to absorption properties and the radio-quiet and radio-loud subsamples are well matched in redshift and luminosity. A similarly high incidenc...

The Optically-powerful Quasar E1821+643 Is Associated with a 300-kpc Scale Fr I Radio Structure

We present a deep image of the optically-powerful quasar E 1821+643 at 18 cm made with the Very Large Array (VLA). This image reveals radio emission, over 280h kpc in extent, elongated way beyond the quasar’s host galaxy. Its radio structure has decreasing surface brightness with increasing distance from the bright core, characteristic of FR I sources (Fanaroff & Riley 1974). Its radio luminosi...

The radio luminosity, black hole mass and Eddington ratio for quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We investigate the MBH−σ∗ relation for radio-loud quasars with redshift z < 0.83 in Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The sample consists of 3772 quasars with better model of Hβ and [O III] lines and available radio luminosity, including 306 radio-loud quasars, 3466 radio-quiet quasars with measured radio luminosity or upper-limit of radio luminosity (181 radio-quiet quasar...

Supermassive Black Hole Masses of AGNs with Elliptical Hosts

The recently discovered tight correlation between supermassive black hole mass and central velocity dispersion for both inactive and active galaxies suggests a possibility to estimate the black hole mass from the measured central velocity dispersion. However, for most AGNs it is difficult to measure the central velocity dispersions of their host galaxies directly with the spectroscopic studies....
